If you opt out or leave employment with less than 2 years membership and have not transferred in a previous pension, you will be entitled to a refund unless you have active (in another post), deferred or pensioner membership.
You can opt out of the LGPS at any time by providing your employer with an opt out form (PDF) [261KB] (opens new window) . It is important to read our For your future (PDF) [2MB] (opens new window) leaflet and to seek advice before opting out.
Your employer will refund you if you have been in the LGPS for less than 3 months.
If you have 3 months membership, your employer will tell us you want a refund.
By law we cannot pay a refund within one month of you opting out, and we must take account of any tax (and for tax years up to 2015 / 2016 national insurance) relief you have received.
